THE END OF AN ERA AS SALFORD INDOOR MARKET FINALLY DEMOLISHED

    SHARE |

Long gone is the Flat Iron pub, the fondly remembered Merry Go Round which brought joy to many a young child, myself included. Many will fondly remember the Pot Man with his dangly earrings as he threw his wares around like a juggler to the awe of his customers, the ease and ability to get quality net curtains cut to order right there on the stall.

Others will remember the 'Flea Market' selling all manor of brick-a-brac and what some would consider to be tat.

Over time the Market would loose it's standing as a shopping destination due to the ever increasing pressures to complete with the bigger super markets on their doorsteps, some would call it progress? Others would say it was a tragedy for the small market traders who looked on helpless as more and more of their fellow stall holders packed up their vans for the last time, succumbing to the inevitable change.

We are told that increasing stall prices did not help matters either.

And so dear reader it is with a heavy heart and a tear in ones eye that we say a fond goodbye to yet another piece of our local history, the 'Indoor Market / Food Hall', which is currently in the process of being demolished to make way (We are told) for a larger car park.

For a short time after the stalls outside were torn down, the 'Indoor Market or Food Hall' as it was known, would still remain active with many including myself popping in for cheese, eggs and bacon but it's days were numbered and it was finally shuttered with some traders offered space in a new indoor market within the shopping centre, others taking up the odd retail unit.

I know that as the market neared it's end, it would become a mecca for those selling, shall we say, 'Slightly Dodgy CD's and Movies' but it will always hold a nostalgic place in my heart and I shall carry fond memories of my mum and dad taking me each weekend to buy new toys, some of which my mum still has in her loft (They will apparently be worth something one day).
