FIVE STAR BOOK REVIEW: THE WIZARD OF WORSLEY WOODS

    SHARE |

I am a big fan of children's books and have an extensive collection from the 1920s to the 1960s, Tiger Tim, Bruins Boys, Boys Annual, Playbox, Eagle etc and for me they all had a sense of fun and innocence rarely seen these days.

So I was delighted to receive a copy of The Wizard Of Worsley Woods by local author P.G. Wilson who has not only written the book but also illustrated it.

The book concerns the aforementioned Wizard who lives in a tree and to give him his full name Wendell The Wizard of Worsley Woods and tells of  his adventures guarding and helping the wildlife who live there.

His idyllic life is interrupted when two young children spot him and with the lure of cake gain his trust and so the story begins, we meet Pricklebob the Hedgehog, Owlberta the wise Owl and the delightfully named, Mrs Chubbington the Cat.

What I found interesting is that the author has used actual locations in Worsley Woods to weave the story around, Warkes Dam, the Money Tree, Cow Fields even Monton Green gets a mention!

This delightful book is a hark to more innocent times of story telling and is the ideal read for children between the ages of four and ten, there is a map in the book showing locations in the book, (sadly not the tree were Wendell lives) and as an added attraction the pages can be coloured in as the illustrations are left open for this purpose.

The book is available from Amazon at £4.99 and I was pleased to see that there are quite a few other books written and illustrated by him for sale on the Amazon site.

So if you have young children of an inquisitive mind this is the ideal book for them, I can recommend it highly, well done P.G, Wilson!
