People in Salford say a new housing development will be “bedlam” for their street as it doesn’t have enough parking spaces. A planning application for 50 new homes based on land at Regatta Street was approved by the city council’s planning committee last week. It will see 36 three-bedroom homes and 14 four-bedroom homes built on the site, which is currently not in use. The developer hopes to use the area to create a new “close-knit community” on the banks of the River Irwell, and deliver “positive economic, social and environmental impacts for the local area.” But residents on nearby Langley Road are worried that it could bring hundreds of extra cars to the area, creating a “fight” for limited parking spaces. They said parking is already a problem, and more homes could make the situation worse. Bethany, who lives on Langley Road, said residents park their cars on Regatta Street because there’s nowhere else to go. She added: “Are we expected to fight with other homeowners for these spaces? “I assume most of these houses will have two cars, where will visitors park who are going to the local cafe? I’d hate to see a small business close due to this.” Another resident named Ruth said she lives in a terraced house next to Regatta Street, which doesn’t have a designated parking spot. She said it will be “bedlam” when the homes are built and new residents want the parking spaces. Ruth explained that she’s recovering from cancer and has regular visits from nurses and her daughter, who need to park close to her house. She’s worried the new homes could impact the care she receives because of the parking issues. The developer of the new homes, Javed Hussain of J2 Corporation Limited, said he’s met with residents and listened to their concerns throughout the planning process. He said: “I have met with residents and sat in most of their lounges. We are proposing 50 much-needed new homes, and we are really excited about the scheme we have put together. “Every one of the residents has been listened to and we have done everything we can to speak to them.” The application was approved after seven councillors voted in favour of the plans.
