On a wet and windy day people came to the Swinton Cenotaph Gardens to see a dedication ceremony for the new ten benches complete with names of local fallen and a Gallipoli Memorial Board listing the names of local men who fell between 25th April - 9th January 1916. The open air service was crowded with families and friends of the fallen servicemen being honoured today as they listened to Salford in Harmony singers then speeches by The Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Gina Reynolds, Mrs Mary Liz Walker, High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Father Sheehy gave The Lords Prayer and Bible readings. Father Sheehy then blessed the benches and the Gallipoli Memorial Board as he walked through the sunken gardens. The Last Post rung out poignantly over the gardens as people bowed their heads in silence as the Flag Standard bearers dutifully lowered them, this was followed by The Kohima Epitaph. Salford in Harmony singers closed the event as visitors poured in to the sunken garden area to view the benches and pay their respects. Special mention must be made to Glen Croston for masterminding the event , he fully deserves all the plaudits Sadly we were unable to bring you the Last Post section of the event due to yet another false copyright claim on our video.
