    SHARE |

The CAN-Move Programme is part of Salford Community Leisure’s, Active Lifestyles Team. It aims to support anyone living with or beyond Cancer, to increase and maintain their physical activity and exercise levels, in a safe and effective way around their health needs during and after Cancer treatment. The programme is a joint partnership between SCL and Greater Manchester Intergraded Care Partnership (Salford Locality). Delivered across Salford in many different settings including Our Leisure Centres, in the community and in the outdoors. Anyone with a Salford Postcode or Salford GP is eligible to join the programme.

Patients can access CAN-Move activities free for 12 weeks, getting plenty of support from staff and peers along the way. We encourage long term adherence to exercise by further support after the initial12 weeks has finished. Our aim is to try and embed physical activity/exercise as part of every patient’s cancer care in Salford, knowing that exercise and physical activity can help play an important role in preventing recurrence and progression of Cancer, amongst a wide range of other physical, mental and social benefits.

It includes exercise in a relaxed atmosphere, delivered to you individually or in a group setting, with a varied timetable of activities offering face to face, online and indoor and outdoor sessions. Benefits of being active after a cancer diagnosis include helping to manage many short and long term side effects of treatments, such as; fatigue, improving cardiorespiratory and muscular strength, improving balance and flexibility, aiding in weight management as well as helping to manage the emotional affects of cancer and its treatments and also improving mood and wellbeing. There is evidence to say exercise can help to reduce recurrence of certain types of cancer by as much as 30%.

Types of sessions include gentle all ability circuit-based classes, CAN-Move Wellbeing Walks, Tai Chi, Yoga, Mindfulness sessions, use of the gym, Wellbeing Gardening sessions, and water-based activities are also available.

    Client Feedback:

‘I would like to say this program is life changing. After the shock of diagnosis and treatment, I was left feeling drained, not only physical but mentally as well. This program has really helped me get my life back on track. Lots of new friends all in a similar situation means you can talk freely about your health if you wish. Confident that they totally understand. Helping you to get active and confident you ‘can move’ . A massive thank you to the team. Bringing a smile back on so many faces. Thanks again.’
