SALFORD CITY COUNCIL TRANSFORMATION OF IRWELL STREET RAMPS UP

    SHARE |

Salford City Council has announced an improvement scheme to support the area's cycle and pedestrian movements.

The project focuses on the Irwell Street approach to Trinity Way, providing new and improved facilities that will seamlessly connect with existing routes and plans for the Bee Network in Salford and Manchester while complementing the 'green walls' of the unique, sustainable Eden office development.

From 4 March to the end of April, there will be temporary changes to traffic flow. There will be no access to Irwell Street from Trinity Way and no access to City Centre; a signed diversion route will be in place via Chapel Street, Bridge Street and Deansgate. Salford-bound traffic will remain unaffected. Motorists wishing to turn right onto Irwell Street from Stanley Street will also be rerouted.

During the scheme, we anticipate delays on surrounding routes, particularly Chapel Street, Bridge Street and Liverpool Road, due to diverting traffic.

There will be two nights of temporary closures from 9.00pm to 6.00am from late April to early May. For the latest updates, customers can check https://www.salford.gov.uk/irwellstreet

The council apologises for any inconvenience caused during this period and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of residents as they work to enhance this pivotal area of the city.

The comprehensive scheme includes several key improvements:

Implementation of cycle lanes in both directions on Irwell Street with a new connection to existing facilities on Trinity Way.
Installation of protected facilities where feasible to enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
I upgraded paving and carriageway surfacing.
Introduction of tactile paving at pedestrian crossings for improved accessibility.
New landscaping and planting to increase greenery and support sustainable drainage.
Addition of a yellow box junction at the intersection of Irwell Street and Stanley Street to bolster cycle access along Irwell River Park and ease local passage.

Adding new trees, plantings, and high-quality paving will further accentuate the revitalisation of this public space. These enhancements aim to enhance the street scene at a crucial gateway location, seamlessly complementing the unique 'green walls' of the sustainable Eden office development adjacent to the scheme.

The full completion of this transformative project is slated for May 2024, promising a more connected, accessible, and green urban environment for residents and visitors alike.

Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development, said:

"We are excited to announce this transformative project that will significantly enhance cycling and pedestrian access in the area.

"While we acknowledge there may be some temporary disruption during the construction phases, the long-term benefits will far outweigh any inconvenience. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our residents as we work towards creating a more sustainable and accessible urban environment for all."
