Police have reportedly been advising that some residents close to Duchy Road playing fields near to Irlam o' th' Height, may have to temporarily be evacuated from their homes as police conduct a search for a possible stash of weapons including firearms and granades following 'inteligence' that they have recieved.

A cordon has been put in place as a precaution whilst officers conduct a search of the area which is expected to take the weekend to complete.

Chief Inspector Jamie Pearson, from GMP, said:

"While we have spoken to some residents about leaving their property, this is purely a precautionary measure, as officers begin to search for what has been reported as weapons within the area.

"I understand that this will cause concern within the community, but there is no specific threat and is related to intelligence gathered.

"Local residents who choose to leave their homes will be supported appropriately, and we are working with partners to ensure this is done swiftly and efficiently. Officers are expected to be in the area for the weekend and will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have."
