A new apartment block with 42 affordable homes could be built in Eccles. The proposed housing scheme will be for social rent and has been submitted to Salford council for consideration. It has been submitted by Bowsall Developments and Mosscare St Vincent’s Housing Group to develop land south of Reginald Street. The planned homes will include 25 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom apartments. If approved, they are set to be designed with features suitable for a range of occupants, including older people, those with reduced mobility, and some wheelchair users. In the building, lifts to all floors and the corridors are to be made wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users. It will come with 34 car parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points, and space for 42 bikes with secure storage on the ground floor of the building. A planning document states that the development would bring “significant environmental, social and economic benefits” and include tree planting and soft landscaping of the area. The plan would be a boost for Salford’s need to provide more affordable housing for residents. But the future of housing in the borough could be about to change as the council recently voted to adopt Places for Everyone, a Greater Manchester-wide housing plan to build more homes. It allocates 28,000 new homes to be built in Salford and is a strategy for future planning applications between now and 2039. The plan is also aimed at boosting growth and creating new jobs around the region.
