Firefighters were called to a devastating blaze overnight as fire ripped through Clarendon Leisure Centre on Liverpool Street in the early hours of this morning (Friday 10th May) . With plumes of thick smoke and flames visible from elevated locations across the city, firefighters fought to bring the fire under control. Roads around the area were closed and local residents were told to keep windows closed. The Salford Community leisure operated centre had been undergoing refurbishment work and was due to fully reopen following the reopening of the pool last month. As yet there is no indication as to the cause of the fire. A statement issued by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), said: “At around 2.45am today (Friday, May 10) eight fire engines from across Greater Manchester plus the command support unit from Hyde fire station, the prime mover from Bolton fire station, and the technical response from Leigh were called to a fire involving a leisure centre off Liverpool Street, Salford," a spokesman said. “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to get the blaze under control using hose reels and jets. Crews remain in attendance alongside partners from Greater Manchester Police and Salford City Council with road closures in place.” Photo: @gholy17 via twitter.
