SMITH | "PLAYERS LIKE ME ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS PLAYERS AROUND THEM"

    SHARE |

Hat-trick hero Matt Smith was thankful for the service provided by his teammates as his three goals earned Salford a 3-0 win at Doncaster.

The 34-year-old is now League Two’s top scorer with 12 for the season, notching his first with less than a minute on the clock when his header from Luke Garbutt’s cross came off the underside of the crossbar.

His second in the 27th minute was similarly taken, this time sending Ethan Ingram’s cross from the right back across Louis Jones and into the far post.

After a spell of intense Doncaster pressure in the second half, Smith’s third secured all three points as he tapped in a parried effort from Dec John in front of the travelling supporters.

Last nights performance was truly outstanding.

Speaking via the teams Youtube channel, Matt said:

“[It was a] really pleasing performance, really pleasing result. To come away to a team that’s in red hot form and put three goals past them is really pleasing, and shoots us up the table a little bit closer to where we want to be. More pleasing was the overall performance and the manner in which we won the game.

“The quality around me, the service into the box. Look at the quality of crosses that were coming into the box tonight, disappointed I didn’t get a fourth to be honest with the ball Kelly put in at the end, I was kicking myself over that one, but ultimately players like me are only as good as players around them.”
