Just before kick-off the heavens opened and torrential rain poured down upon the pitch at the Mazuma Stadium but that was nothing compared to the pain that rained down on Salford's Ammies during the 5 minutes of added injury time which would see the team that was a goal up, concede two to lose.
Jordan Turnbull headed a corner off target, whilst Robbie Gotts’ shot from a distance was comfortably defended by Kyle Letheren.
Cole Stockton and John O’Sullivan kicked the ball around between each other, with Stockon making a run on the goal, but he took one touch too many which gave Turnbull time to recover and block his attempt.
Salford looked in a secure and dominating position after a Thomas-Asante’s shot from the corner of the area after a free kick from Ashley Hunter , Asante left Letheren scrambling and failing to keep the ball out of the back of the net, securing what would be the first and only goal of the match for the Ammies.
It looked like the three points were in the bag for Salford until the last 5 minutes of extra time in the match when Mendes Gomes levelled for Morecambe in the 94th minute, sliding the ball into the net after a hit on the bar from a corner.
Salford already looked stung but nothing would prepare then for what was to come as Toumani Diagouraga made a shot from a distance and Wildig expertly diverted it home to claim Morecambes second of the night, securing them a shock victory.
For a brief moment Salford looked like they had levelled but the ref called foul and that was that, the game was over and the Ammies headed on back to Salford with nothing in the bag.
