TRIBUTES FOR SALFORD RED DEVIL MALCOM ALKER

    SHARE |

The world of rugby league was shocked to hear of the untimely death of Malcolm Alker aged 45.

Malc Alker as he was better know to Salford fans spent his entire professional career with the Salford City Reds, making over 350 appearances between 1997 and 2010, and serving as the club's captain for many years.

Bill McLaughlin the clubs photographer and John Blackburn, Operations Director at Salford Red Devils Foundation paid their tributes to him today

    Bill said:

"As Club Photographer with the Salford Rugby League Club for more than 20 years, I had the privilege of knowing Malcom Alker throughout his time at Salford Reds first meeting him as a fresh faced 16- or 17-year-old after signing for Salford.

He was at Barton Moss Primary School in Eccles to coach the school kids’ rugby league around 1997.

Even then his leadership, fearlessness, determination, and passion for the sport he loved were obvious. Over the years I worked with Malc too many times to mention, he would always do what he was asked, with a smile and a mischievous glint in his eyes.

Yes, Malc had his issues and demons, but what could never be called into question was his ability, loyalty, and ferociousness once he took to the rugby field.

A ‘One Man Club’ is something of a rarity in any sport, especially so in Rugby League, Malc had opportunities to move on and further his rugby career, but Salford’s very own "Captain Marvel’ chose to stay at the Willows and the club he loved.

I have many memories of a great and kind man, like the time literally days after having his appendix removed, Malc was back on the field playing for Salford with what can only be described as the foam interior from an armchair strapped to his side for protection.

How many other players were or are that brave, that tough and had that desire to play no matter the pain, that was Malc.

The word Legend is all too often banded about in Sport, but for me Malc Alker will always be a Salford Legend, respect mate and I hope you now find the peace you deserve. RIP Malc."

    John Blackburn said:

"Devastated to hear the tragic news about Malc.

Malc, alongside Lee Hudson, were the first two apprentices ever taken on by the club and were always a credit to the club.

Malc was tough, committed, skilful and inspired many other youngsters coming into the game.

He was very supportive of me when I had my health issues and he will always be a treasured part of my memories at The Willows.

    R.I.P."
