The University of Salford has scooped a top accreditation for its master’s in Clinical Exercise Physiology. The Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) has officially endorsed the course, making the University of Salford only the second institution in the country to achieve accreditation.

This new role has been endorsed by NHS England, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the British Association of Sports Rehab (BASRaT).

Dr Steve Pearson who leads the course at Salford explained that the quality mark will enable  graduates to register with the AHCS as Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs).

He, said:

“The AHCS accreditation is a serious feather in our cap, and great recognition of the calibre of our course. It will further the employability of our graduates, making more doors open for them as they move into clinical practice.“

The accreditation highlights the University’s commitment to delivering education that meets the highest professional standards in sport and exercise.

One of the team delivering the course, Dr Eddie Caldow, previously worked as a CEP in the NHS and was involved in developing the curriculum framework for MSc CEP programmes with CEP-UK, the governing body.

He explained the importance of this new register healthcare role and how it will improve patient care:

“Graduates from our MSc programme are now eligible to register as CEPs and work in clinical settings to support people to live well. Through our course they will have developed an advanced level of knowledge, skills and experience which has been set by CEP-UK and the AHCS and delivered by the University.

“In turn UK healthcare settings will have even greater confidence employing our students as they know the calibre of the course we teach. The end result is that patients living with long-term health conditions will have improved access to safe and effective exercise-based treatments across the country, which is great news for everyone concerned.”
