‘This roundabout is so dangerous – someone could get killed’

Salford council has been urged to take action and prevent a possible tragedy at a ‘dangerous’ roundabout.

The roundabout at the top of Monton Road is a main route for cars into the trendy high street, which is known for its mix of cafes, bars and shops.

Some say new measures are needed to make it easier for people to cross the roundabout where Monton Road meets Monton Green and Broad Oak Park.

Holly Muldoon lives in nearby Eccles and is a regular visitor to Monton Road. She was recently elected deputy chairman for membership and finance at Salford, Worsley, and Eccles Conservatives.

The 36-year-old said cars regularly approach the roundabout at high speed, making it difficult for pedestrians to find a gap to cross, and said more needs to be done to improve safety.

She added that the situation is urgent with more children expected to be around as the school holidays get started.

“We’re trying to push them to get zebra crossings on that roundabout, it’s so dangerous, the cars go so fast along there,” she said.

“We’re coming into the summer holidays now, but the speed they [cars] go on there could kill someone.”

Monton Road is a popular area in this part of Salford, based in the west of the city past Salford Royal Hospital and near the M602.

It draws local residents, visitors and families to its shops, and there is an existing crossing further up the road near Monton car park.

Data from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) shows several accidents have taken place on the approach to the roundabout in recent years, with a ‘serious’ incident in 2023.

Salford council did recently take measures to improve safety in the area, by reducing the speed limit to 20mph along a section of Monton Road from the roundabout.

Councillor Mike McCusker, said:

Coun Mike McCusker, transport lead at Salford council, said: “The safety of residents is extremely important and were have a number of road safety improvement projects in place.

“In Monton, this includes additional crossings, a new 20mph speed limit and funding to support the design for improved active travel in Monton.

“A programme to install further crossings around the city has been allocated additional funding with locations prioritised based on road safety.

“In addition, the new Bee Network strategy for travel to school will see improvements at 90 sites near all schools in Salford, which are being assessed to implement any further improvements that are required across Salford.”
