New 20mph speed limits are planned on some of Salford’s roads.

A total of 24 roads in the Swinton Park area are part of changes to improve road safety.

The first phase of new speed limits is set to be approved by Salford council at a meeting on February 14, covering residential neighbourhoods including on Leigh Avenue and Beechfield Road.

The second area will cover May Road and the Westlands area, with the third and fourth zones adding Osborne Drive (Swinton Park ward), Birch Drive (Pendlebury and Clifton ward), and the surrounding streets.

Plans for new speed limits in Salford have come after calls from residents for safer roads.

Coun Mike McCusker, Salford council’s transport lead, said the change is part of a wider goal to end traffic deaths on the city’s roads.

He added: “The evidence is clear that reducing speed limits to 20mph rather than 30mph results in more positive outcomes for those involved in traffic accidents and supports the Vision Zero strategy to reduce and ultimately eliminate traffic fatalities.

“If approved, the three areas and the roads highlighted, would form the first tranche of a wider ambition to reduce the speed limit for residential streets throughout the Swinton Park ward area.

“In line with the proposals, there would also be work to encourage and promote the benefits of walking, wheeling or cycling as a way to improve health and wellbeing and reduce noise pollution.

“The goal is to ensure a safe environment for these communities, as part of our commitment to create a fairer, greener, healthier and more inclusive city for all.”

New speed limits will be brought in along the entire length of the following roads:

  • Beechfield Road
  • South Avenue
  • First Avenue
  • Second Avenue
  • The Square
