We are saddened to hear the news that Eccles councillor Sharmina August has taken the hard decision to step down to prioritise both her own and her families health.
Sharmina has been instrumental in helping salford.media with our VIP pensioner events and we truly could not have pulled them off without her, we truly appreciate the work she put in.
I remember opening an online petition to have local hero Alan Henning both posthumously awarded the freedom of the city as well as bestowed the honour of having a local road named after him, to which without hesitation, Sharmina stepped up to the mark and championed the cause to which Salford City Council unanimously backed. She didn’t stop until the task was complete.
As I am sure you are aware, Alans family accepted the award on his behalf at a ceremony held last year and the road which runs alongside the Salford Community Stadium will soon carry his name.
In the short time I have known Sharmina she has certainly made a huge mark on Eccles, pushing hard for the regeneration of the town centre and never one to shy away from answering the hard hitting questions.
I am proud to say that the City of Salford has a well defined track history of producing strong and empowering females and Sharmina ranks amongst the best. She continually used her position to help people in her local community and boost the areas profile at every opportunity.
She will be sadly missed not only by her fellow councillors and Eccles residents, but by myself, Tony Flynn and Salford residents as a whole.
We wish to say thank you on behalf of the City and wish you well in your coming ventures.
