The Super Leagues 2021 season kicked off for Salford with a defeat away behind closed doors at the Emerald Headingley to current title holders St Helens. In Marshalls first test as The Devils new coach after taking up the mantle from Ian Watson who left at the end of last season, he saw himself pitted against Kristian Woolf, the man whom he served under at St Helens last season. Despite having an insight into his old teams tactics, it was not enough to secure a win over them as St Helens showed they were very much on the same dominant form they were last season. St Helens were in command from the start of the game and they maintained their lead comfortably throughout the match. They held complete control over the first half, which ended with them 13 up on Salford as they headed back to the changing rooms. Salford looked a little more of a threat in the second half with a try by Sio in the corner at the 55min mark, giving Salford a little hope which was bolstered even more by a goal by Inu shortly after, but neither were enough to do much damage to their rivals as the final score came to 29-6 and an easy win for the Saints. None-the-less this is the first outing for Richard Marshall as the big boss and he was up against a formidable foe in the form of the current league champions, better luck next week against Hull. New head coach Richard Marshall believes it is ‘an exciting time for Salford’ after taking over at the Red Devils for the 2021 campaign following the departure of former coach Ian Watson, who headed off to take charge of Huddersfield Giants at the end of the last season. Marshall said: Under the guidance of Ian Watson, Salford's Devils progressed from being just nail-biting seconds away from relegation in the Million Pound Game, navigated considerable financial challenges and brought joy to the city by charting his side to a Super League Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final in consecutive seasons. Marshall has some big boots to fill and he intends to do just that as on opening night he takes aim at his former club St Helens where he was number 2 to Justin Holbrook when the club sealed another title against Salford 12 months earlier. Kick off for the match is set for Friday 26th March, 2021 – 18:00 with the Reds heading along the East Lancs to the Emerald Headingley Stadium. Marshalls picks for the opener are: Addy, Brown, Costello, Escare, Ikahihifo, Inu, Johnson, Kear, Lannon, Livett, Lolohea, Mossop, Ormondroyd, Patton, Pauli, Sarginson, Sio, Taylor, Watkins, Wells, Williams St Helens are the club to beat this season as they look to bring home a third consecutive Super League title.
