  1. The UK low cost supermarket chain has submitted proposals for its new store that it is hoped will regenerate the area around Mocha Parade in Lower Broughton which was built in the 1970's. If approved by Salford City Council it will become the 14th store within Greater Manchester as the chain expands across the country. Subject to approval, work on the store will start later this year with demolition of the existing building, erection of the store and extensive landscaping, as the area is known to attract wild birds including water-foul. The plans include what is described as a flood basin along with a wild flower meadow which should provide an area for the local wildlife as well as become a focal point in the area. The store will be built upon a flood plain and has seen flooding in recent years but the opening of a new flood basin and wetlands in Kersal has been a huge game-changer for the area as it has provided protection to local homes and businesses. In Feb 2020 the newly opened flood basin was put to the test during the worst of storm Ciara, a test it passed with flying colours. When opened the multi million pound investment will provide around 40 jobs in the local area with a further 40 jobs to be created at another store in Castle Irwell. 2. The proposals put forward for the 25 acre site by developer and investor, Scarborough International Properties, were given the green light by council planners on Thursday of last week. This will bring 189 homes in two tower blocks to the Northern side of the canal, directly opposite to stage 1. One tower will be 10 stories high, with the second being 12 stories. Stage 2 of the development was topped out earlier this year in February, just before the lockdown measures were implemented. It is hoped that phase 3 will now commence construction in early 2021 thanks to BCEGi (Beijing Construction Engineering Group International who are to over see the build. Development Director at Scarborough, Paul Kelly, said: Once completed, the 25-acre Middlewood Locks development will provide a total of 2,215 new homes and 900,000 sq ft of commercial space, including offices, hotel, shops, restaurants, a convenience store and gym. Overall, the site has a gross development value of more than £700m, according to the developers.
