    BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR THE AMMIES

    SHARE |

Salford City made it back to back wins with a 2-0 win at Sutton United thanks to second half goals from Matt Smith and Kelly Nmai.

Top scorer Smith notched his sixth goal in 14 appearances with a back post header to convert Adrian Mariappa’s flick-on from Dec John’s corner.

He then turned provider by clipping the ball across to Nmai at the back post who lifted a shot into the roof of the net for his actual first senior goal for the Club, having been denied at the weekend.

Sutton rarely troubled Alex Cairns at the other end, the ‘keeper making a late save in stoppage time to register a first clean sheet since a 2-0 win at Forest Green Rovers on the opening day.

The Ammies are up to 17th in the table now after maximum points from the last two games, and Neil Wood believes Tuesday’s points and clean sheet were deserved for Salford.

“I thought we were outstanding, I thought first half was excellent, possibly should have gone in at half time two or three goals in the lead and you know there’s always going to be a comeback, there’s going to be a reaction in the second half, but I thought we dealt with it well, controlled the game, tidied up the game and when we needed to keep the ball well, and I thought we were really good out of possession as well.

“Sometimes when you dominate so much and you hit the post twice you always think is this going to come back to bite you so it was important that we scored the first goal when we did, then to go again I thought Kelly scored an excellent individual goal for our second goal, then I thought we saw the game out really well. I thought it would have been really unfair for us to concede in that game.”

Salford set the tone from the kick off when Elliot Watt attempted an ambitious lob that dropped just a couple of feet wide of Dean Bouzanis’ goal, in front of the travelling supporters. Stevie Mallan followed that up a couple of minutes later with a shot from the top of the box that was saved.

Matthew Lund volleyed a cross from Nmai wide after adjusting his body well, and Curtis Tilt had a header saved before Luke Bolton tried a shot with the outside of his boot from the top of the box that clipped off the foot of the post. From the loose ball Nmai crossed for Smith whose shot was blocked, and a couple of minutes later he headed a Lund cross onto the post from inside the six-yard box.

Sutton’s only chance of note in the first half came in the 42nd minute, a free kick lofted in that Joe Kizzi headed into the middle, only for Hisham Kasimu to head straight at Alex Cairns.

Into the second half and Salford again continued to dominate, with Smith opening the scoring 10 minutes into the second half. Nmai forced Omar Sowunmi to clear a cross for a corner that John delivered to the near post and Mariappa flicked on; it may have been heading into the far post, but Smith made sure it went over unmarked at the back post.

He could have had his second 10 minutes later, Nmai escaping in behind on the left and playing a teasing low cross that just evaded the far post. Smith picked up possession to the right of the area and clipped a ball back to Nmai at the far post, unmarked, to slam a shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Smith had another chance for a second in the final 10 minutes, firing a low shot across goal after a strong forward run by Ethan Ingram, and in stoppage time Sutton nearly pulled a goal back as Josh Coley rounded Alex Cairns in the wake of Harry Smith’s robust challenge on Tilt, but the Salford stopper managed to get a hand on the ball before Coley could shoot.
