  1. Salix Homes has five new apprentices, four of whom have joined its Repairs and Maintenance Service, while the fifth is learning the ropes in the Customer Service Team. Among the new recruits is 19-year-old Connor Boyle who had all but given up hope after applying for job after job but never hearing back. New-dad Connor, from Kersal, who welcomed his daughter into the world in June, said: Connor is embarking on a plumbing apprenticeship, following in his granddad's footsteps, and will be learning the tools of the trade four days a week while spending a day in the classroom with education providers Total People, working towards an NVQ. Over the past three years Salix Homes has created more than 50 apprenticeship positions through its Earn as You Learn programme, both within the organisation and with its partner contractors. Sue Sutton, executive director of operations at Salix Homes, said: The new apprentices joining Salix Homes’ Repairs and Maintenance Team have been provided with new toolkits from its partner building merchants - Travis Perkins Managed Services. Maggie Devine, social value manager for Travis Perkins Managed Services, said: "We are passionate about supporting apprentices coming into the industry, and hope that the provision of these new tools will support them on their journey to train in their chosen profession. After controversially (See Salford Star Article Here) turning down planning permission in July 2018, Salford Council has today (Thursday, September 6 2018) finally approved plans for the multi-million pound Canon Green Campus development on Canon Green Drive in Trinity. Previously the Council had rejected the application with Councillors declaring that it was "Odd", "Wierd" and even "Bonkers" that the council would reject affordable housing in the area whilst at the same meeting giving Countryside Properties the green light for 299 private rent apartments more or less around the corner in Broughton. The good news is that finally the £22.5m project by Salford housing association Salix Homes will see ageing tower block Canon Green Court completely transformed and modernised, along with neighbouring apartment block Westminster House, which will undergo an external facelift. As part of the development, a brand new 11-storey apartment block will be built within the grounds of the expansive site, comprising of 108 one and two-bedroom affordable apartments. Lee Sugden, chief executive at Salix Homes, said: The refurbishment at Canon Green Court, which was built during the 1960s, includes new kitchens, bathrooms, heating systems, sprinkler systems and exterior re-facing and insulation. Salix Homes, which owns more than 8,000 homes across Salford, will now appoint a contractor to carry out the project and it’s hoped that work will start on site later this year.
  3. The social housing provider, which owns more than 8,000 homes in Salford, came in at number 11in the prestigious 24Housing Top 50 Landlords 2018 roll of honour. The award recognises the brightest and best social landlords from across the UK, who are delivering significant change both within their organisation and communities and in the wider housing sector. Salix Homes, which only formed as a stand-alone housing association following a stock transfer from Salford Council in 2015, recently launched its #Rethinking Housing campaign, challenging the sector to think differently about how housing services are delivered, to meet the demands of a modern world. Lee Sugden, chief executive at Salix Homes, said: Since launching in 2015, Salix Homes has invested almost £40million improving homes and communities across Salford.

    SALFORD NEEDS AFFORDABLE HOMES

    In a city that is crying out for affordable low-cost, low-rent housing, I am utterly dismayed to read in the Salford Star (http://www.salfordstar.com/article.asp?id=4601) that a proposed application by Salix Homes for such housing at Canon Green Court was recently refused by Salford Councils shambolic planning department. .map-responsive{ overflow:hidden; padding-bottom:32.4%; position:relative; height:0; border: 2px solid #fff; background: #262e33; border-radius: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } To add insult to this, they went on to approve another housing development from Countryside Properties that offered zero affordable homes and zero section 106 money to be used within the local community. Do these imbeciles not understand that not everyone is wealthy enough to be in a position to afford one of Fred Done's luxury apartments? I have lived in this area for coming up to 7 years now and although that is a relatively short time compared to others who have lived here far longer, even I have noticed the negative change being thrust upon us as historic buildings are torn down all around in order to facilitate the developers in their quest to make more money by attracting people into the area from outside of Salford, riding on the back of the prestige of living so close to Manchester. Luxury high-rises now tower above us and although I admit we do need to provide new homes, these homes should be affordable to everyone in Salford, not just the rich. I see on the Salford Online facebook group the words 'Salford, Sold by the Pound' all the time and I totally agree, this is gentrification, nothing more, nothing less. I have to ask just who is benefitting from all of this new regeneration as it is most certainly not the existing population as they get pushed further and further out of the area they have called home. Salford Council should be grasping at the chance to provide affordable rental properties, not shutting down such much-needed developments. It is bewilderingly crazy.
