The University of Salford is beaming with pride as Physiotherapy student Rebecca McGowan has been chosen to represent Team GB at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Rebecca, who is part of the GB Taekwondo team, expressed her excitement saying,

“To say I’m over the moon is an understatement. We have all worked so hard for this moment, so that when you finally get the news it doesn’t seem real!”

Rebecca’s journey to this pinnacle of sporting achievement began when she was just six years old in Scotland, determined to outperform her neighbor in all sports. Her interest in martial arts was sparked by his involvement in the sport, and she quickly surpassed him, showcasing her natural talent.

Spotted early for her potential, Rebecca moved to Manchester at the age of 16 to train with the national youth team. Her dedication and hard work have paid off, leading to her selection for the Olympics. This year, she has been intensely focused on refining her skills in preparation for the biggest competition of her career.

At 24, Rebecca is in her third year of a four-year Physiotherapy course at the University of Salford. She chose this course due to its stellar reputation and its flexibility as one of the few part-time courses available in the UK. Her own experience with injuries fueled her interest in physiotherapy, and the course has provided her with valuable recovery and strengthening techniques that complement her athletic training.

Rebecca has thrived at the University of Salford, thanks to the unwavering support and flexibility of her trainers and teachers. She has successfully balanced the demands of elite sports training with her academic commitments.

She, said:

“My trainers and teachers have been so supportive and flexible here at the University of Salford. I’ve been able to divide my time between working all out to be the best I can at my sport, at the same time making my grades and doing my study at Uni. It’s been hard, but amazing too.”

Her accomplishments in taekwondo are remarkable. Rebecca won a World Championship bronze medal in 2022, followed by a silver in 2023. She also claimed a European title in 2021, a European bronze in Manchester the following year, and another European bronze just a few weeks ago.

As Rebecca prepares for the opportunity of a lifetime in Paris, the University of Salford community is behind her every step of the way. We will continue to support and celebrate her journey, eagerly anticipating her performance at the Olympics.

Congratulations, Rebecca, and best of luck in Paris!
