Salford Red Devils say they are thrilled to announce the appointment of Jafaru Awudu Mustapha as their first-ever Ghana Rugby League Development Manager, effective from July 1.
This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a partnership formed in October 2021 between Salford Red Devils and the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG). The collaboration aims to not only promote the game of rugby league in Ghana but also to establish the Salford Red Devils as a prominent name in West Africa.
Over the past two and a half years, significant strides have been made towards this mission. The appointment of Jafaru Awudu Mustapha marks a pioneering move for professional rugby clubs globally.
Jafaru, a prominent figure in Ghanaian rugby, has made notable contributions to the sport over the past decade. From graduating from the first rugby league match officials and coaching course in Accra in 2012, he advanced to roles such as General Manager of the RLFG, National Team Manager, and lead on the Middle East Africa Championships. His extensive work has included deploying rugby league initiatives in schools, clubs, and communities throughout Ghana. In his new role, Jafaru will focus on integrating the Salford Red Devils brand across the country and discovering new rugby talent in Accra and beyond.
Paul King, Managing Director of Salford Red Devils, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment:
“We have always envisioned this partnership as a long-term commitment. Our ultimate goal is to see Ghanaian players excel at the highest levels of rugby league, representing Salford. To achieve this, Ghana needs support, resources, and education. We believe that the Salford brand will help foster a new generation of rugby league enthusiasts in West Africa.”
Remond Safi, MEA & Americas Regional Director, emphasized the importance of this milestone:
“The Red Devils are leading the way for professional clubs in Africa, not only in developing the game but also in promoting the best practices seen in the UK. For rugby league to thrive in developing nations like Ghana, partnerships with clubs like Salford are essential to making the sport accessible on an international scale.”
Jafaru Awudu Mustapha, reflecting on his new role, shared his excitement:
“I look forward to working with the local community, inspiring young athletes, and fostering a love for the game. My goal is to teach the skills and strategies of rugby league while promoting teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. I hope to make a lasting impact and contribute to the development of future rugby league stars in Ghana who may one day wear the Red Devils badge.”
Madame Storey, President of the Rugby League Federation Ghana, also highlighted the significance of the appointment:
“We have long recognized that having a dedicated rugby league staff member in Ghana will help the sport flourish and give our young players the opportunity to showcase their talents on a larger stage. We thank Salford for their commitment to our community and look forward to the day when a Ghanaian national proudly wears the Salford jersey.”
Jafaru’s initial focus will be on mass coaching within local schools and mapping performance pathways for juniors, youth, and adults. Monthly reports on his progress will be shared with the Red Devils office.
