Salford Red Devils fans are planning a protest against the club’s ownership this weekend.
On Sunday (August 17), fan group The 1873 is planning a march starting from 1pm at Salford City Roosters to the main reception at Salford Community Stadium.
It is set to take place just before Salford Red Devils face Wakefield Trinity at home, with the match due to begin at 3pm.
The fan group – named in reference to the year the Salford rugby league club was founded – is also planning to empty the stands at the 30-minute mark of the match.
It said the action is being planned ‘against the club’s ownership and abhorrent failures’ that have left the club in crisis.
Salford Red Devils have a long history of rugby league in the city but are facing major challenges both on and off the pitch.
The club was taken over by a consortium in February with promises of investment, but the team’s supporters’ trust has said these promises have not been delivered.
This week, the club’s chief operating officer Claire Bradbury resigned, making allegations that the ownership ‘suggested she sleep with an individual at the RFL to smooth things over’ for the club.
Salford Red Devils said it is launching a ‘thorough investigation’ into the claim and is ‘determined to establish the facts and take any necessary action’.
Salford mayor Paul Dennett and mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham have both spoken out about the club’s situation in the last few days.
Mr Dennett described events at the club as ‘extremely worrying’ and said the council ‘remains committed to the long-term sustainability of professional rugby league in this city’.
Salford Red Devils are sitting rock bottom of the Betfred Super League with a points difference of -777.
The team plays at Salford Community Stadium, which is owned by Salford council after a £7.7m buyout from former co-owners Peel.
