Salford Lib Dems Condemn “Out-of-Touch” Pay Hikes for Mayor and Deputies as Costs Rise for Residents

The Salford Liberal Democrats have criticised Labour councillors for approving a 33% increase in the City Mayor’s allowance—raising it to £98,000—as well as a 25% increase for each of the city’s two Deputy Mayors.

A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats said that Salford remains the only council in Greater Manchester with two Deputy Mayors on the payroll, both now receiving significantly increased allowances.

“This decision shows just how disconnected Salford Labour have become from the challenges local people are facing,” said Councillor Paul Heilbron. “At a time when residents are being hit with higher Council Tax and rising bills, Labour are choosing to prioritise pay rises for themselves.”

Just last month, a 5% Council Tax rise came into effect, on top of increased Greater Manchester precepts. Meanwhile, millions continue to be spent on controversial projects such as the Salford Community Rugby Stadium, while frontline services remain under pressure.

They say that in contrast, the Liberal Democrat-led council in Stockport just last month chose to reject similar pay increases, showing that a different approach is possible.

“We believe leadership should lead by example,” added Cllr Heilbron. “These increases are not justified, and Salford residents are right to be asking who this council really works for.”

The Liberal Democrat group made clear in the council chamber that they supported some of the recommendations, including the long-overdue uplift to the basic councillor allowance because it helps make local politics more accessible to working people and those from underrepresented backgrounds. It’s the right thing to do, and we’ll defend that position,” said Cllr Heilbron. “But we cannot and will not support the disgraceful increases at the top. Residents deserve better.”

The Salford Liberal Democrats voted against the proposals and are encouraging residents to review the full details, available on the Council’s website.
