This Saturday, Salford City Council will once again host a spectacular Armed Forces Day Parade and Family Fun Day to honor the service and sacrifice of military personnel. The event is set to take place on June 29th from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, featuring a parade that will travel from Dukes Drive Car Park in Monton, Eccles, and conclude at Winton Park, Eccles. The parade will be followed by an exciting array of family-friendly activities, including children’s rides, face painting, and live entertainment, creating a festive atmosphere for attendees of all ages.

This year’s celebration holds special significance as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a pivotal moment in World War II. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, marking the beginning of the end of Nazi occupation in Western Europe. The bravery and sacrifices made on that day are being remembered through various events across the UK and France.

The parade ends at Winton Park

Salford’s commemorations began earlier this month with a poignant event at the Salford Civic Centre, featuring a specially commissioned film and moving tributes from city leaders .

This morning, people gathered on the lawns outside Salford Civic Centre in Swinton to pay their respects as flags were raised to commemorate those brave souls who set out from our city to fight for our country, many of whom never returned.

The Armed Forces Day Parade in Salford aims to bring the community together to celebrate the contributions of service members and their families. It is a free event, and no prior booking is required. The festivities in Winton Park will include performances by children’s entertainers like Louby Lou the Clown and Magic Philip the Magician, as well as musical acts such as Dominique and the Flat Cap 3 singers.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett emphasized the importance of this anniversary, stating:

“On this significant 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom. Their courage reminds us of the immense sacrifices made by those that gave their lives and to veterans that survived that day, many of whom have carried the scars of this harrowing battle through the rest of their lives.”

Residents are encouraged to join in the celebrations to not only honor past heroes but also to support current armed forces members and their families. This event is a testament to Salford’s enduring respect and gratitude for those who have served and continue to serve in the military, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
