Last night, Friday 28th March saw crowds flock to The Langworthy Cornerstone to see the latest exhibit there, Salford 77 by renowned photographer Phil Portus.

One hundred monochrome images showing all aspects of life in Salford at that time. pubs with the customers dressed in their best clothes having a sing a long to the resident pianist, Cross Lane Fair showing children and adults all entranced by the magic of the fair, the desolate and empty shops on Regent Road, once the main shopping thoroughfare in Salford, slum clearances, and so, so much more.

One aspect of the show which I found touching is that Phil managed to trace down several people whose photos he took in 1977 and photographed them again in the closet proximity to the original shot. there photos and stories are told on information boards dotted around the exhibition, Darren Robbins and Julie Linney take a bow

I was  delighted to see many familiar faces there last night, Geoffrey Key, David Gleave, Georgina Robinson, Doreen Burns, Phil Cusack, Andrew Simpson. Steve Marland, Paula Jennings, Anthony and Stephen Lord, Nicola Kerr, Elaine Cassidy, plus many, many people who were took back to those days in 1977 and talked with love and affection for a lost Salford, which Phil had captured for us all to see in this incredible exhibition.

This really is a must see exhibition if you have, not only a love for Salford and photography but an interest in social housing and leisure from that era, Phil has recorded it all and for that I am more than grateful

The Salford 77 exhibition runs until the 29th of August at The Langworthy Cornerstone Gallery, Monday – Friday 9am – 7pm
