  • CLEAVLEY UPGRADES ARE ON TRACK THANKS TO A MAJOR INVESTMENT FROM SALFORD COUNCIL

    Salford City Council

Plans to upgrade Cleavley athletics track are heading for the finish line.

With running & athletics becoming an even more popular sport and way to keep fit - Salford City Council is investing £447,000 in resurfacing the eight lane synthetic track and creating extra car parking to manage demand at its Cleavely Athletics Track in Winton, Eccles.

The track, managed by Salford Community Leisure, meets the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) standard and is the city’s premier running track.

It’s home to Salford Met AC with additional athletic and leisure opportunities offered by Salford Harriers Juniors AC, Wheels for All Salford, a charity cycling project which provides inclusive cycling for people of all ages with a range of different abilities and SAFA - the Salford Action For Autism Group.

Cleavely track is also the venue for several schools sports and club events each year as well as weekly Bootcamp sessions aimed at all abilities.

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, said:

“This facility is crucial to local sports clubs and organisations and the upgrade will allow this to continue. Limited car parking at the site has been causing problems but re-configuring the current spaces and expanding onto the former horticultural nursery site will help address this issue.

“The improvements to the facility will increase sporting and leisure opportunities for the people of Salford.”

The work is expected to be fully complete in early summer this year and the contractors have agreed to offer work experience, use local suppliers, take part in pathway into construction career events and hold open days showing how the track will be upgraded as part of Salford City Council’s social value scheme.
