Emergency services descended upon Barton Road in Eccles on Thursday afternoon (August 15) following reports of a house fire believed to be linked to a cannabis cultivation operation.
Around 3:50 pm, police, paramedics, and four fire engines from Irlam, Eccles, Agecroft, and Stretford stations were dispatched to the scene near the Barton Swing Bridge. The fire crews swiftly employed hose reels, breathing apparatus, and a positive pressure ventilation fan to combat the flames.
The incident led to significant traffic congestion during the rush hour, with nearby Peel Green Road also cordoned off. Eyewitnesses described the situation as “traffic mayhem” as emergency vehicles lined the busy thoroughfare.
Upon investigating the property, officers identified what they believe to be a cannabis farm inside the premises. While no casualties have been reported, the house sustained visible damage, including a charred door that appeared to have been removed. Police maintained a presence at the scene into the evening, keeping the area secured for further inquiries.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police, said:
“No arrests have been made as of yet, but enquiries remain ongoing. We thank the public for their patience as Barton Road remains closed.
“Incidents such as these can cause significant risk not only to the occupants but to neighbouring residents and properties due to the dangerous practices involved.”

A representative from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue (GMFRS), said:
“Crews arrived quickly and used two hose reels, breathing apparatus, and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire.”
