Network Rail has submitted plans to build a third platform at Salford Crescent train station.
A planning report states that it is one of the ‘busiest stations in Greater Manchester’ and has nearly 1.5 million annual entries and exits according to the latest figures.
The proposed new platform is aimed at increasing the station’s capacity, reducing crowding on existing platforms, and reducing instances of multiple trains arriving at the same time and having to wait.
A report supporting the application states: ‘The new platform will service the Up Bolton line and is designed to allow standage for 6 x 24m long carriage trains.
‘Passenger access to the new third platform will be via a new staircase and lift adjacent to the existing station ticket hall.
‘A canopy will be provided for the new platform as well as new staffing facilities at platform level.
‘Additionally, a new external gate line is introduced as part of the scheme to accommodate the increased capacity.’
It is expected that a new platform at the station will also help to increase railway usage in the area and reduce the number of cars on Salford’s roads.
Salford Crescent station acts as a major transport interchange for the city, offering passengers routes around Greater Manchester and the city centre, as well as further afield.
Regeneration work is taking place in central Salford, with new apartments and houses being built to accommodate the growing number of people moving to the city.
Salford Crescent first opened in 1987 and improvement works took place in 2013, which involved platform extensions, a new canopy and relocation of the ticket office to street level.
