  10. An impromptu gathering outside the headquarters of the BBC in MediaCity, saw a well attended crowd gather to demand that coming changes to TV licencing for the 75's and over are shelved. The unpopular move by the BBC would see means testing employed to determine the eligibility of pensioners for a concessionary licence. Under previous legislation, anyone aged 75 or over could apply for a concessionary licence but now that is all set to change as the new ruling will mean that only those pensioners in receipt of pension credit will be eligible. In 2015 the Conservative government, guided by George Osborne, struck a deal under which the subsidy would be phased out by 2020, with the broadcaster having to shoulder the cost of free TV licences. This will result in an estimated 3 million+ elderly people losing out on their free licence once the new scheme takes effect on the 1st of June 2020. Unite the Union stood shoulder to shoulder with Salford Pensioners Association and the GMB's Retired Members Association to send a powerful message to the bosses at the BBC. The peaceful protest saw a number of speeches given by local campaigners, one of whom is a familiar face in Salford, (Media) Maria Brabiner who has been at the forefront of campaigning against what is now universally termed the bedroom tax. Maria was visibly angry over the coming changes and told us it is an absolute disgrace that from next year pensioners will be faced with losing their concessionary licences. She said, During the protest the BBC turned on the charm offensive by sending down a trolley filled with tea and biscuits for the gathered crowd, an offer which was promptly refused by all. One lady cheekily responded by saying that the gesture by the BBC was part funded by the £154.50 per year she has to pay. Several people we spoke too were quick to note that they laid the blame squarely with the Government who were responsible for the removal of the funding which covered the costs. One man said, Another responded saying, Chants of shame on you and down with the Tories, down with the BBC, were heard resonating around the square and after the speeches were made, the crowd peacefully dispersed soon after.
  11. Shortly after 8.30pm on Sunday 21 April 2019, a man entered Delta Supermarket on Brookhurst Lane, Little Hulton, brandishing a kitchen knife. He threatened shop workers and demanded money from the till before leaving with a quantity of cash, which he placed in a white draw string bag with ‘JD – King of Trainers’ written on it. Police have released CCTV images and are appealing for information. Detective Constable Philip Kumeta of GMP’s Salford District said: Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 5194 quoting incident 2177 of 21/04/19 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

I say "go, Jerry, go!". Which means that the conservatives have lost the seat previously held by Iain Lindley who stepped down from Council earlier this year. This means that the ward now has 3 Labour councillors. The election had previously been postponed due to the unfortunate death of the Conservative candidate George Andrew Darlington, who sadly passed away shortly before the May election. 19. Salford's debut in the Carabao Cup will be one to remember after they have been drawn against Leeds United, The Ammies will take on the Leeds at home on the hallowed ground of the Peninsula Stadium. This is the first time that Salford have competed in the cup having won promotion to League Two last year after a sensational victory against Fylde at the spiritual home of British football, Wembley. The Ammies first match in the new season is set to be at Moor Lane, home of Stevenage. The match against Leeds will be a test for the new arrivals on the scene, although they finished third in the league last season and failed to be promoted they are still a formidable side in the league and all eyes will be on Salford to see how they perform. The Ammies are in a whole new league now and the little club which has already made huge waves is set to sail some stormy seas ahead. With the right captain and crew it looks like they could easily ride out the waves as SkyBet have already recently tipped them as bookies favourites to take the League Two crown. Manchester United legend and club part owner Gary Neville summed things up by tweeting a cheeky taunt at his old league rivals.
