Historical Background

Buile Hill Park has a rich history that dates back several centuries. The park is home to Buile Hill Mansion, a Grade II listed building, which was built between 1825 and 1827 for Sir Thomas Potter, the first Mayor of Manchester. The mansion was designed by the renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, known for his work on the Houses of Parliament in London.

In 1902, Salford Corporation purchased the Buile Hill estate to transform it into a public park. The park officially opened in 1903 and quickly became a popular destination. Over the years, the mansion served various purposes, including housing a natural history museum and later, a mining museum. Unfortunately, the mansion has been vacant since 2000, though work is well underway to restore it for future use.

  7. 1939-1945: During World War II, the park was used for military purposes, including serving as a base for RAF Balloon Barrage. It sustained damage during the Salford Blitz in 1940.
