St Luke’s Church Weaste also known as The Church on the Hill, holds a place in the hearts of generations of Salfordians either having been baptised there, married there or being buried from there.
It does have a fascinating history opening in 1865 to the design of George Gilbert Scott, also it’s the Church where Emmeline Goulden married Richard Pankhurst in 1879 and would achieve fame as the Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst.
The interior boasts numerous stained glass windows by Charles Eames Kempe, War memorials to the local people who fell in the South African war and The Great War , it became a Grade 11 listed building in1980 and is a valuable community asset.
However we spoke to the Reverend Jo Jarrett who told us of the sad state the church is in, and her plans to raise much needed money and revitalise the church by having a collective of artists, musicians, poets etc meeting their weekly headed by local artist/musician Tony Easom.
If you can help in any way please contact Reverend Jo Jarrett at St Luke’s Church, Liverpool Street, Weaste, Salford.
