Plans to build ‘much-needed homes’ have been revealed for Winton, Salford.

Land at the former St. Matthews Church and Presbytery on Worsley Road could be used for a new scheme to build two apartment blocks with a total of 40 properties.

The site is about two miles from Eccles, where a major regeneration project is taking place led by Salford council to revamp the town centre.

Eccles town centre also offers access to a Metrolink stop and railway station, with connections to Manchester city centre and beyond.

St Matthew’s church closed in 2018 and last year the buildings were knocked down to make way for new development, planning reports state.

Each of the proposed apartment blocks will be four-stories tall, with the flats having either one or two bedrooms.

All the proposed homes will be for social rent, in a development led by Lancet Homes on behalf of ForHousing.

As for parking, future residents in the homes would be able to use a car park with 20 spaces accessed from a new entry point off Worsley Road.

The plans will be decided by Salford council and work could start as soon as spring 2026 depending on getting approval and the speed of the process.

A planning report states: ‘The resulting scheme is a high-quality residential development comprising a mix of one and two bedroom apartments, situated in a highly sustainable location.

‘The development has been designed to integrate well with the surrounding context while delivering much-needed homes.

‘Importantly, the proposals will make a meaningful contribution to the local housing supply, responding directly to identified housing needs and supporting broader regeneration objectives.’

Salford council has set a target date of October 22 to decide the application.
