A column of thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky above Salford this afternoon after a number of tyres were set alight in dense woodland close to Duchy Road in Pendleton.
Fire engines from Agecroft, Broughton and Salford stations were deployed to the area, quickly bringing the fire under control before extinguishing it.
It is unclear as to how the fire started.
The smoke was observed over a wide area of the city, including Salford Quays and Irlam & Cadishead.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At shortly before 1.50pm on Tuesday (April 8) two fire engines from Agecroft, Broughton and Salford fire stations were called to a fire involving a large pile of tyres off Duchy Road, Salford.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using jets to tackle the fire. Crews remain in attendance.”
