Amidst a downpour of rain, stood afront the famous black door of number 10 downing street and with Labour anthem ‘Things Will Only Get Better’ being played over a megaphone by protestors, Prime minister Rishi Sunak has announced a General Election will be held on the 4th of July, the first July election since 1945 when Labours Clement Attlee was famously victorious over Winston Churchill, a sign of things to come?
This means that for the first time since 2019, the people of the country will get a say in who will become the new PM, with Labours Sir Keir Starmer looking to already be well ahead of the race in most polling.
Speculation had been rife in the press for most of the day with some ministers being called back from their duties abroad ahead of the announcement.
Some amongst the Tory ranks have reportedly already called for a no confidence vote in Mr Sunak as their party faces what could be political oblivion if those polls are correct, with the chair of the Tories 1922 commission Graham Brady, being said to be accepting texts from ministers, with huge queues allegedly forming outside of his office door..
Labour have been preparing for a general election for a long time now and are looking to land a huge blow upon the Tories following their own disastrous defeat at the last General Election, showing just how quickly things can turn in politics.
The Liberal Democrats who have managed to take council seats within Salford following years in the political wilderness will also be looking to capitalise on the news.
This will be a huge gamble for the PM along with the Tories who will be hoping that recent news on lower inflation will be favourable for his party, however it could also go spectacularly wrong as polls suggest the worst Tory defeat since Tony Blair took power in 1997.
Campaigning from all sides will be kicking into overdrive with rallies already planned by the Tories as early as this evening.
If you wish to take part and cast your vote then please do not forget that you now need voter ID to do so.
