Somewhat a tradition at the Rotary Club of Irlam, members were out and about presenting primary school leavers with a gift from the Club as they make the journey up to High School.
The tradition started many years ago with the presentation of dictionaries, as that became ‘old hat’ as technologies advanced, it was then a USB stick and for the past few years a reusable aluminium water bottle, good for the environment for taking to school and of course branded with the Irlam Rotary logo and that of sponsors.
Bill McLaughlin, Organiser and Community Chair at the Irlam Rotary Club said, “This year after speaking with the head of maths at our local High School it was decided to change the water bottles for Helix Oxford Maths sets in a metal tin. A useful gift that can be used at High School for not just Maths but also Geography and the Sciences.”
Members from the Irlam Club visited the nine Primary Schools in the area and presented 300 Maths sets to students taking the next step on their educational journey.
Bill added, “Each Maths set not only contained the likes of a protractor, ruler, pencil, compass, rubber and other items, but also a printed message from Irlam Rotary Club and sponsor Dowdson Garage that read, ‘With the compliments of the Rotary Club of Irlam and Dowdson Garage Ltd. Wishing you every success and Good Fortune as you continue your journey to High School’. A fitting gift that went down well with the students and will hopefully help them on their academic journey.”
Pictured are the sets being presented by President Jane Williams and members of the Rotary Club of Irlam at schools around Irlam and Cadishead.
