Dementia is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior, it’s not a normal part of aging, and it’s caused by diseases that damage the brain.
While there’s no cure, treatments can help manage symptoms and improve the quality of life of those affected.
A chance conversation in the beer garden of The Stanley Arms, Patricroft last week between the Landlord Andy Allan and Carole Ann whose partner Dave is affected by Dementia has led to to the founding of a support network group for family, friends and carers.
Andy told me,
“I was chatting with Carol and she told me of the struggles she has caring for Dave, things I took for granted can be be major obstacles for many Dementia sufferers, and so I decided to let Carol use the beer garden, weather permitting or the back room of the pub each Tuesday afternoon between the hours of 2pm and 4pm, were people can meet and chat with like minded friends”
I have known both Carol and Dave for many years, and it is cruel to see the deterioration in Dave over the past few years, from being a keen sportsman and good company, to a man who barely recognises you.
Carole Anne said,
“I want this pub to become a meeting point for carers like myself, were we can share ideas and build up a network of friends, we don’t want people to be isolated at home, and feel forgotten, we are here to help, please feel free to call in and talk”
The Stanley Arms pub has a nice, safe atmosphere with refreshments and drinks provided by Andy who does so much for the local community, so if your loved one’s are affected by this terrible illness, why not call in?
