The Salford roads where thousands of drivers are getting parking fines have been revealed.

A freedom of information request submitted by the Local Democracy Reporting Service found that Salford council made more than £1.1m last year from around 40,000 parking fines in total.

Michigan Avenue in Salford Quays was named the worst place in the city for problem parking, where the council issued 1,394 fines between June 2024 and 2025.

The road is close to the growing number of tower blocks and new developments in the Quays neighbourhood, as well as being the entrance to several businesses.

It was closely followed by the council’s car park off Stott Lane opposite Salford Royal Hospital, where there were 1,351 penalties handed out to drivers.

Ordsall Lane between the busy Trafford Road and Regent Road came in third, with nearly 1,100 parking fines issued within 12 months.

Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) of £50 or £70 can be issued to drivers breaking parking rules in Salford, depending on how severe the problem is.

These are reduced by 50 per cent to either £25 or £35 if paid on or before 14 days of the PCN issue date.

Several schemes are taking place in Salford to try and reduce the city’s reliance on cars.

This includes plans to transform the banks along the River Irwell into a series of walking routes and a new park.

A massive project is also taking place on Chapel Street where the council is installing new bike lanes, extra pedestrian facilities, and space for buses.

Salford Rise is another major project, where a landmark bridge is being built across Frederick Road to create new walking and cycling connections.

Coun Mike McCusker, lead member for planning, transport and sustainable development at Salford council, said: “Due to its location, Salford Royal East P&D is a busy car park and there are Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) issued to ensure that it is managed adequately and is available for those that work, visit or are patients at the nearby hospital.

“With a mix of users, the PCN numbers quoted for Salford Royal East P&D Car Park will not all be issued to patients accessing healthcare and the charges set reflect the charges set at the car parks within the adjacent hospital estate.

“Any surplus income is governed by section 95 of the Traffic Management Act 2004. In terms of the income from parking fines issued, this is allocated to fund the enforcement and follow up process, back office, pay and display machine provision and maintenance, as well as general car park maintenance and maintaining road safety and reducing congestion by enforcing parking restrictions on the highway network.”
