Salford City Council has announced a significant road improvement project on the A666, set to begin shortly. This major undertaking involves resurfacing the road, enhancing safety features, and improving pedestrian crossings to better serve the community. The project is expected to take several weeks, during which time traffic disruptions are likely. Temporary diversions and reduced speed limits will be in place to ensure the safety of both workers and road users.
Purpose of the Roadworks
The primary aim of the A666 project is to upgrade the road surface, which has suffered wear and tear due to heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions. The resurfacing will not only extend the lifespan of the road but also provide a smoother and safer driving experience. In addition to the resurfacing, new road markings and signage will be installed to enhance traffic management. The roadworks also include improvements to pedestrian crossings, making them more accessible and safer for all road users.
Stages of the Roadworks
The project will be carried out in two stages to systematically address the different aspects of the road improvement:
Stage 1: Resurfacing
This stage involves a closure between just before Crescent Avenue and Agecroft Road eastbound.
- Tuesday 13 August, 7pm to 6am
- Friday 16 August, 7pm to 6am
- Thursday 29 August, 7pm to 6am
Stage 2: Signage and Pedestrian Crossing Enhancements
This stage involves a closure between Agecroft Road westbound and Irlams o’ th’ Height Roundabout.
- Friday 9 August, 7pm to 6am
- Monday 12 August, 7pm to 6am
- Wednesday 14 August, 7pm to 6am
- Thursday 15 August, 7pm to 6am
- Friday 30 August, 7pm to 6am
The nearly two-week gap in these dates is due to the curing times of the materials used for surfacing before a high-friction layer can be laid.
Impact on Traffic
Motorists should expect delays during the construction period, as lanes will be closed intermittently, and diversions will be implemented. The council has coordinated with traffic management teams to minimize disruption, but some inconvenience is inevitable. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, allowing extra time for travel, or consider alternative routes to avoid the affected area. The council is also advising the use of public transport where possible to reduce congestion on the roads.
Communication and Updates
Salford City Council has pledged to keep residents and road users informed throughout the duration of the works. Regular updates will be provided via the council’s website and social media channels, offering the latest information on road closures, diversions, and expected completion times. The council appreciates the patience and cooperation of the public during this essential upgrade and assures that the long-term benefits of the project will outweigh the temporary disruptions.
